VAT on second hand goods can be claimed in your VAT 201 return with SARS. This can be done without the seller being registered for value added tax.  The deemed VAT amount of the claim will be work out in this formula : Amount of purchase x 14 / 114. 

There are a few requirements to take note of...

1.  You still need an invoice for the amount of the purchase of the asset.

2.  You need proof of payment for the full amount.

3.  The seller need to complete and sign the prescribed form from SARS.

4.  Make sure you get a copy of the ID of the individual or registration documents of the entity of the seller.
